Widely regarded as the crowning masterpiece of The Lady and the Unicorn series, À Mon Seul Désir is the sixth and most enigmatic tapestry in this celebrated cycle of medieval French art. Woven in Flanders around 1500, the series is among the greatest achievements of European textile craftsmanship and is preserved today in the Musée de Cluny in Paris.

The composition depicts a noble lady gracefully placing a jeweled necklace into a richly adorned casket, accompanied by her attendant. Flanking the scene are the iconic lion and unicorn, each bearing heraldic banners that symbolize nobility, virtue, and mystery. Unlike the other five tapestries, which represent the traditional senses, À Mon Seul Désir is often interpreted as symbolizing the “sixth sense,” embodying themes of love, free will, wisdom, or spiritual understanding.

Set against a magnificent crimson background, the tapestry is enriched with the celebrated mille-fleurs (“thousand flowers”) style, featuring a luxuriant field of blossoms, foliage, and woodland creatures. The intricate details and harmonious composition create an atmosphere of elegance, symbolism, and timeless beauty.

A masterpiece of medieval imagination and artistic refinement, À Mon Seul Désir – The Lady and the Unicorn remains one of the most admired and studied works in the history of European decorative arts. Its profound symbolism, exceptional craftsmanship, and enchanting imagery make it a distinguished addition to any collection inspired by cultural heritage and classical artistry.
